The Fear of Feminism

The phobia of feminism in young women today is alarming. This fear is due in part to the lack of education about feminism. Not many people teach these young girls who to look up to as role models. Most of them are idolizing the women in Hollywood movies or on TV. Oppression is reinforced by TV and the movies and is teaching girls to idolize the women who are being oppressed. Many of my cousins are all in this situation and it makes me rather sad. I want to open their eyes and show them what I have learned, the life they deserve. After reading Lisa Marie Hogeland’s article Fear of Feminism: Why Young Women get the Willies, I wanted to photo copy it and send it to all my female cousins. However, I would have added examples of all less familiar styles of women’s oppression. These girls need to be shown all of the ways they are oppressed, especially the ways they never considered. My cousins and all the young women I work with throughout my life must be taught about the equality they deserve. With my degree if hope to enhance the quality of living for as many children as possible. I want to teach all of my students about peace and equality in all its forms. These children will in turn teach other children with their actions and words. This sharing of knowledge will hopefully cause a chain reaction and bring about a wiser, more peaceful and accepting generation. Being a feminist is nothing to be ashamed of, it is no different from being anti-racist. Feminism is standing up for equality.

Beauty

After the past several readings and the all of the diverse presentations, I have had some dificulties organising my thoughts on what I want to do with all this information. I took a bath (some of my biggest life decisions came to me in the tub) i smoked ciggerettes and paced back and forth in the living room, while my roomates dog watched with suspicion. I stared at the ceiling for hours while images of the women of Juaraz, the quilt, betrayed by the angel, partner violence and supermodels raced across my mind. I came up with no resolutions or a storyboard with a plan of action for the future. I did however put my pen to paper and wrote this poem for all of you.

There is a bee working in my garden.
He is tenacious and doesn't skip a beat
while he flits from plant to plant.
"Bee, where can I find the words to describe
the women at Prescott College?"
I ask.
Bee responds without stopping his work,
"You must go to the flowers,
flowers are where beauty is born."

Following Bee's instructions
I go searching for flowers.
I come across a patch of white sandwort,
I kneel down close to investigate.
After several minutes of study,
I realize that I have never REALY
looked at flowers before.
Bee was right!
There is burden in the stem,
strength in the overies.
I can see care and compassion of the calyx,
There is determination in the stamen,
dignity in the pistil
and patience in the petals.

All these words are embodied in every one of you.
But there are times when these words seem to disappear
from our lives and the rest of the world.
The world will turn and turn again,
and continue to go through times of
war, oppression, cruelity and malice.
In these times of despair,
these words won't fully vanish.
Instead, they will just take tempurary refuge
in our hearts and in the beauty of the flowers.

Tv Commercials

Research for a presentation I am doing in another class led me to look up sexist tv commercials on Youtube. I have to say that I was disappointed when I looked up things like sexist video, sexist commercials, and other variations lots of times I found clips of girls making out or Beyonce in concert. There were more "sexiest" videos with scantily clad women than "sexist commercials" that came up on my searches..and I don't think it's because there are fewer sexist commercials.

It's also so scary/depressing sometimes to go online to forums or videos about feminism and read people's comments! Yikes! I have been overwhelmed lately online doing research for things how much hate there is regarding feminism!

Women's Health legislation

no time for bloggy, just linky:

Senate Passes Women's Health amendment:
http://prescriptions.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/03/senate-passes-womens-health-amendment/?hp

"Breaking a three-day stalemate, the Senate approved an amendment to its health care legislation that would require insurance companies to offer free mammograms and other preventive services to women."

I just finished reading the article Unequal by Jessica Neuwirth and was once gain blown away by the lack of equality for women. Even after months in a feminism class, continuing to learn about laws that discriminate against women is mind boggling. The most upsetting thing about all the information I have gathered over the past few months is the lack of discussion on what to do about it. Sharing the information is important but beyond that what else is being done. In Unequal there are pictures of women protesting, but they are in another country that has much more severe laws, the one they are specifically protesting states that four adult males must attest to witnessing a women’s rape. I would love to hear about what type of protests are going on in the United States because as of right now I feel like the feminist movement has settled for what they have gotten thus far. Although this is hard to believe considering how many women suffer in the US and because of it. Please someone give me an example of something done recently in the name of women.

A Short Story/Poem

This is a short story/poem that my partner's sister sent me the other day. I found it to be very uplifting and brought tears of joy to me. The author is unknown so if you have heard it or seen it and know the author please let me know...

By the time the Lord made woman,
He was into his sixth day of working overtime.
An angel appeared and said,
"Why are you spending so much time on this one?"
And the Lord answered, "Have you seen my spec sheet on her?
She has to be completely washable, but not plastic,
have over 200 movable parts, all replaceable
and able to run on diet coke and leftovers,
have a lap that can hold four children at one time,
have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart
-and she will do everything with only two hands."
The angel was astounded at the requirements.
"Only two hands!? No way!
And that's just on the standard model?
That's too much work for one day.
Wait until tomorrow to finish."
But I won't," the Lord protested.
"I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart.
She already heals herself when she is sick AND can work 18 hour days."
The angel moved closer and touched the woman.
"But you have made her so soft, Lord."
"She is soft," the Lord agreed,
"but I have also made her tough.
You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish."
"Will she be able to think?", asked the angel.
The Lord replied,
"Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason and negotiate."
The angel then noticed something,
and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek.
"Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model.
I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one."
"That's not a leak," the Lord corrected, "that's a tear!"
"What's the tear for?" the angel asked.
The Lord said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy,
her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love,
her loneliness, her grief and her pride."
The angel was impressed.
"You are a genius, Lord. You thought of everything!
Woman is truly amazing."
And she is!
Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up to injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.

They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideals.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have vital things to say and everything to give.
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.
